The Beginning
David and Verna Rucker Handley
David Handley was born in 1918 in Mer Rouge, a village in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. A small town edged with pine trees and cotton fields. His father, Alex Handley, was 23, and his mother, Jester Handley, was 24.
Across the state line in Arkansas, in 1917, Verna Mae Rucker took her first breath as she entered the world.
On March 11, 1936, in Drew County Arkansas, 21-year-old David and 19-year-old Verna were married. Over the next 26 years, they welcomed 16 children.
In the course of their journey, David and Verna established their home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where they became devoted members of the Union Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. They lived long and fulfilling lives, marked by steadfast faith, enduring love, and a legacy that continues through their descendants.
In 1984, in Pine Bluff, Verna’s life came to a gentle close at 67, and the family gathered close as they always had. A few years later, in 1988, David followed at 74, still the steady center even in his leaving.
